Are Links Counter Intuitive points towards this, and this is nothing new for anyone who is reading anything one the in last little while. Whenever you read any document on the web you do see a number of links in the document.

For some of us this is a blessing when links are external. You can see more contents from more sources and therefore chances are that the material you are reading is more authentic if it has external references. However there are a bunch of people like me who can not focus on anything particular within a given span of time. These external links makes there reading very terrible. Before they could finish one article, they are easily distracted by the external links and are lost in the chain. This obviously does not happen always. But to assume that it never happens will be wrong too.

So should an author be really concerned about the distraction these links may cause. Certainly not. One great advantage of links from a blogger’s perspective is traffic sharing. Bloggers tend to refer to each other. So they happily refer to each other in their post and there by sharing their traffic with each other. From a blogging point of view, you will never be able to gain any traffic from your fellow bloggers, unless you are ready to give some of your own. Like any other thing in life give and take is part and parcel for running a successful blog.

Also if you are awfully concerned about distracting your reader by these links there are certain techniques that can be utilized to minimize the level of distraction caused by these external references.

Related Links

A related links section may be created for the purpose. List all related links of the post here. An example here

Appendix

Similar to a related links section, you can an appendix. The differences between a related links section and an appendix of external references is that in your article you can refer to items in appendix, while these items themselves refer to to external sources. Like Related Links sections, this Appendix will also be at the bottom of your article. There is less chance of your reader being distracted and leaving your page when he sees the links in an appendix as these are at the bottom.

However these techniques should not really matter for a reader who is really after your contents. If they want to read it, you have little to worry about. Create Solid contents and you are on top.
