Browser Trends In Tech vs General Audience

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I was triggered by an article More People use Win98 then Vista. To find the latest stats on different trends of browsers, operating systems, screen resolution etc, I keep on visiting Browser Stats Page of W3 School. However the trends on this page are a general snap shot. It may not give me the best picture of the audience I am serving.

The w3 schools suggest that 54% of the users are using 1024×768 [till Jan 07] . The stats is too old now and more importantly it is for a general audience.
It should not be a surprise [anymore] that different audience group use very different technology. This revelation came to me once I checked the screen resolution stats a while back. The theme I designed for my personal tech oriented blogs was designed for 1024×768 pixels. And when I checked what my audience is actually using .. its a bummer. I will soon have to make sure that all my audience are getting proper readability for my theme. Here is the break down that I have for screen resolution.

  • 46.00% 1280×1024
  • 26.57% 1024×768
  • 21.17% Unknown
  • 2.59% 1152×864
  • 2.59% 1600×1200
  • 1.08% 800×600

While for a General Audience the stats look like

  • 44.83% 1024×768
  • 34.08% 1280×1024
  • 13.18% Unknown
  • 4.67% 800×600
  • 2.23% 1152×864
  • 1.01% 1600×1200

As a picture is worth a gazillion words .. here is something easier to read.

The general audience will catch up with the geeks eventually… but that might take a while.

A more interesting point to notice is that geeks… those who KNOW computers… prefer Firefox over IE.
