Though Google hits from people searching with keywords H1 Visa, H1-B and all sorts of are still welcome. Why because most of these people are tech oriented [I guess] and are welcome to http://contents-magic.com/.

This post is however not about H1 visa. It is about the Importance of H1 tags in your WordPress theme. Most People don’t realize when they design their themes that there are things beyond the title tags and URL that affect your page ranking in search engines.

There are many factors that a search engine decides about the context of the page. If your page is linked from other pages with similar context, the links coming from those pages are worth more for certain keywords. Therefore if you are in the process of building links for your site or blog, You obviously try to get more links from pages that have the same context. However people what forget in doing that is tell the context of the their own page in a clear manner, leaving the search engines guessing.

There are definitely several factors that help search engine figuring out the context, but what if you have a little control of your own, wouldn’t you want to exploit that for your benefit. Well if you don’t, others certainly will.

Anyhow the point is that your hierarchical use of heading is also one of the ways in telling your audience and the search engine about the context. Since H1 is the top level heading, this is the most important heading on any page. One absolutely important point regarding this is that you should only have one H1 heading on the whole page. All other headings should be hierarchically organized within H1.

This brings me to another important note. Most people have their front page listing recent articles, and each one of those headings is H1. This is violation of this guideline. In my opinion on your front page, your tag line that generally describes your blog should be your blog should be made h1. You may use whatever styling to display that tag line. Most likely this styling of h1 will be different from the styling of h1 on other pages. To display the list of articles on front page just use H2.
