Blogging Mistakes

March 13th, 2008 ·

You are never too old to make mistakes. Never too young to start over.

I had been watching an indian blogger Shankar Ganesh  who covered a lot of ground in a very short period of time. A lot of his success in gaining a good link popularity seems to come with his highly socialized manner and lots of friends, but you can never discredit the good work he has done. After the launch of his site, the first PR update from Google gave him a very healthy rank of 5. Then for a while I stopped reading his blog. Just yesterday, I stumbled upon  ways to use your pendrive and found that it was the same blogger, who stopped publishing at his personal blog and instead started a brand new blog of Tech Tips.

It was clear that the young fellow did not planned his move perfectly. Starting a brand new blog while relinquishing the older one is not always a mistake. Perhaps it could be good decision , had Shankar taken his time to use the PR juice he has already generated by his personal blog. Currently his tech tips blog is sitting at a PR of 0, though I am sure he has decent traffic, as he is using the same rss feed url.

I would suggest Shankar to migrate all of his tech related posts to his new blog. Put a 301 redirection on the previous blog. That will repair some of the damage. Given that he has a good domain name, I believe he would succeed in this one just like he did in his personal blogging endeavor.

Some good tips for anybody considering moving their blog to a new domain. However, I’d suggest not taking the Toolbar PR seriously. It bears no relation upon either traffic or search engine rankings, and has become pretty much redundant.
    Great post, thanks.

    @SEO UK,
totally agree with that. Google PR is not something to be obsessed with, though its a good indication of your link popularity at a glance.

    Hey there,

I really want to thank you for your kind and timely advice.

I didn’t want to import posts and go around a mess, but I think I must do it now.

A few people talked about me about this, but I really didn’t realise the importance of doing an import and redirection.

Thanks for your words, they were like an eye opener :) and I might be importing stuff soon.

Wow, I’ve made a lot of those same blogging mistakes in the past.

Now I’m trying to learn as much as I can before starting another blog!

Hopefully the next time I’ll get it right!

Thanks for the post. I was planning to host my own blog with some of the free blogs hosting services like blogger or wordpress. But according to you the best way is to start with a blog on new domain altogether. Great tip!

    I agree with you :)

Moving to a brand new website is like moving to a brand new home where nobody know you there for a while

    Thanks :)

Thanks for the suggestion. This blogger healthy page rank of 5 after the first update is a great PR jump for the first page rank update.

Most people end up doing the same thing with their blog. they get started a little blindly and then find their way once they are deep in it.

A 301 redirect would be a perfect idea. No sense in wasting all that PR and link juice.

i came across your post about WP-polls. have tried this plugin as per your advice but i had a small problem.

The Poll bar width is too much when you view results

I like to know how to fix this. i am using in posts by adding [.poll id =1]

    Thanks in advance.

Agreed, most people put too much consideration into Google Pagerank. All hail the might wrath of google.
